What’s an appropriate amount to charge?
I’ve been doing web design / development for friends & family for a while now but have never tried to market my skills (even though a few have suggested I try).
Recently, I’ve been contacted by a friend’s friend to design and implement a small business website with basic xhtml / css as well as some light php and sql databasing; however, I don’t have any kind of a portfolio or previous business design experience. I don’t want to charge too much without those things, but I also don’t want to undermine my abilities and charge way below market norm. Does anyone have any guidelines I can follow to help come up with a price?

Don’t even consider anything less than $20 per hour since the pros advertise at $50. Even a small website can get to be a big worrisome prob if/when things start going wrong. I have more gray hairs from small ones than I have from big ones…. ;-(
